Our Christian Responsibility Toward Creation
Too often, animal suffering receives little attention in Orthodox thought and practice.
At Pan-Orthodox Concern for Animals, we turn to the Orthodox Church’s living tradition to better understand our relationship with God’s creation.
We look to Scripture and the Church Fathers to recover a fuller understanding of our responsibility toward animals and what that responsibility asks of us today.
Through our work, we deepen understanding and seek a faithful response to the suffering of God’s creatures.

Creation Care: Christian Responsibility Course
This Course establishes that concern and compassion for animals is not a modern phenomenon but one found both in the Bible and in the earliest teachings of the Christian Church. It provides an anamnesis of a lesser-known Orthodox tradition, where all animals are loved and protected by God and that their suffering is against God’s will.

Prayers for Animals/Creation
We welcome prayers, old or new, from different Orthodox countries. Met. Kallistos of Diokleia teaches that the saints’ use of prayers for animals “shows compassion for animals and their suffering” which supports the argument that compassion and concern for animal suffering is not new.

Saints & Animals
From the beginning of the Christian Church there were many saints in different countries, who loved animals. They lived with them, rescued them, nursed them and saved them from hunters. In turn, many saints were helped by animals.
We have listed some of these saints in order of their feast days. We hope that the information on them is useful.
